The “BAD thing” passed down from mother to daughter

When we hear the word menstruation, many of us instantly see a familiar picture: pain, limitation, discomfort.

When I was 12, I was trembling with anticipation, waiting to “finally become a woman.”
It felt mysterious, special, almost sacred — every day was filled with expectation.

When I mentioned it to my mother, she only said:
“Enjoy it while you can… until your BAD comes.”
That’s what she called it.
Soon enough, I learned what she meant — I was “SICK,” as she put it. She used the exact same words her own mother taught her.

It was a strange mix of emotions: the excitement of a secret initiation, and the fear of what was coming — and why it was supposed to be bad.

It took about twenty years and more than 1,400 days of having my “BAD thing” to learn that it doesn’t have to be painful, limiting, or uncomfortable.

Today, I can call it something else.
Today, I can call it moon-time.

And I can finally feel gratitude for it — because my bleeding symbolizes both life and release. It shows me that my body is healthy, and it sends me messages I can learn to read.

My body is not the enemy

For decades, ads and social messages drilled the same idea into us:

✨ “Act like it’s not even happening.”
✨ “Hide it.”
✨ “Stay productive — no matter what.”

Humor sometimes helps soften these taboos.
One of my favorite stand-up clips is by Sasheer Zamata, whose bit on menstruation perfectly exposes how absurd our cultural attitudes are:

“Why do we pretend nothing is happening… when literally something IS happening?”

(Watch the clip on YouTube — totally worth three minutes.)

But what if we chose to see this time differently?

The Moon’s rhythm pulses within us

The female body is cyclical.
Just as the Moon circles Earth in 28 days, the body dances through its own rhythm: creating, releasing, resting, renewing.
This rhythm isn’t an obstacle — it is the rhythm of life.

Around 2015, I discovered Miranda Gray’s “Red Moon”, one of the foundational works on menstrual consciousness. She calls this natural cycle a “sacred pattern” — a gift woven into the essence of womanhood.

Every month, the body gives us a chance to pause.
To let go.
To begin again.

When we view menstruation as a physical and emotional reset, the pain and discomfort can reveal their true message: the body is speaking, guiding, inviting rest.
This phase isn’t weakness — it’s wisdom.

In nature, nothing grows endlessly — there is winter, preparing the soil for spring.
Menstruation is the inner winter.
A return inward — where body and soul come back into alignment.

During this time, allow your body to rest.
Wear softness — nothing tight, nothing restrictive.
Just comfort that supports you.

Menstruation is not a problem — it’s a resource

Cyclical awareness is not just biology — it’s a shift in consciousness.
It means we don’t try to “push through” these days, but instead listen to what they ask of us:

Perhaps rest.
Perhaps grief.
Perhaps quiet.
Presence.
Maybe a boundary you’ve been afraid to set — or an “yes” you’ve been waiting to say.

Our message is simple:
Your cycle is not an inconvenience.
It is communication.
It is connection.
It is the oldest heartbeat of your body.

Do you try to “get it over with” — or are you ready to explore what it’s telling you?

Connect with your body’s rhythm — through the Hip-Hip collections.
Every style is created to honor the female cycle: safe, natural, beautiful.
